Here\’s what I discovered after receiving an early Samsung Galaxy Ring prototype.

The Galaxy Ring\’s first impressions.

\"Galaxy

  • The Galaxy Ring\’s exterior is curved.

  • The Galaxy Ring is available at MWC in three hues: Ceramic Black, Gold, and Platinum Silver.

  • Samsung displayed the Galaxy Ring in nine different sizes during the MWC (5 through 13)

The Galaxy Ring is an item of great excitement. For what seems like forever, Samsung has not released a new wearable technology. Additionally, it offers us a look at how the company plans to evolve its line of fitness and health wearables in the years to come. Samsung only hinted at the Galaxy Ring at the Unpacked event last month, but now it has released a much more detailed image of MWC 2024. The only information the company has provided regarding the Galaxy Ring\’s release or price is that it will be available later this year.

Dr. Hon Pak, Vice President of Digital Health at Samsung, hosted a roundtable discussion where we were briefed on the company\’s goals and plans for its health platform. Naturally, the Galaxy Ring figured prominently in the conversations. Designs were displayed during the meeting, but taking pictures of the device was banned.

During the session, only non-functional prototypes were displayed. Neither the Galaxy Ring devices nor their phones were in use. You could, at most, only get a feel for how wearing the device would feel, but even that could change—as Samsung has repeatedly stated, the product is still developing.

For instance, the Galaxy Ring, which is made of a plastic shell, was displayed in Ceramic Black, Platinum Silver, and Gold finishes. If the finished product were to be metal-plated for a more upscale appearance, that fact was not confirmed. Additionally, there is plastic within that is filled with modules and sensors. Samsung has not yet provided any details regarding the sizing procedure, but we do know that it comes in sizes 5 through 13.

Since the Galaxy Ring is intended to be used at all times, it\’s good that it felt incredibly light and comfortable to wear. Wearing a smartwatch to bed doesn\’t feel as cozy, and the Ring, which promises better sleep tracking, tackles this problem. Because it will prevent surface scratches, Samsung made a wise decision by giving the device a more concave shape.

Pak devoted a significant amount of time to discussing the Ring\’s four new sleep tracking features, which include heart, respiratory rate, night movement, and sleep latency tracking. These features are not present on Galaxy Watch devices. With the help of machine learning magic, Samsung will combine this data to create a Vitality score that offers a thorough analysis of the quality of your sleep.

In addition to measuring steps, the Ring can also track periods, movement, blood oxygen levels, skin temperature, and much more. With no buttons, screens, or lights on the smart ring, it\’s a more user-friendly platform that\’s easier to use than a smartwatch and more comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. If you want to track your fitness and health but don\’t want to wear a smartwatch, the Galaxy Ring is ideal.

Speaking with passion, Pak outlined the potential that Samsung has as it develops its cutting-edge health platform. Speaking about the sleep apnea detection feature of the Ring, he hinted at the prospect of the Galaxy Ring eventually establishing a connection with a smart mattress that has the ability to instantly lower the temperature when the Ring detects that you\’re becoming too hot.

In the future, according to Samsung, your phone, watch, ring, and even fridge will cooperate to deliver connected care without causing any issues for any one device. It\’s an admirable endeavor, but much will depend on how well Samsung implements its initial smart ring. Right now, everything appears to be very promising.

Regarding the Galaxy Ring, Samsung has a lot of surprises in store. The upcoming smart wearable was not anticipated to make an appearance at Mobile World Congress in 2024, particularly since Samsung hasn\’t previously made any significant announcements at the event. Still, it did happen!

Samsung arrived in Barcelona with the Galaxy Ring—that is, the current version of the Galaxy Ring. The wearable is reportedly evolving, so perhaps this isn\’t the final version, according to the company. Nevertheless, at MWC 2024, we had the chance to take numerous pictures of the current Galaxy Ring hidden behind a glass enclosure. You can view our picture galleries below.

Furthermore, Samsung hopes the Galaxy Ring will include four additional sleep-related features that the Galaxy Watches currently do not: night movement, respiratory and heart rate tracking, and sleep latency tracking.

Samsung has not disclosed the exact launch date of the Galaxy Ring, but it should be available for purchase before the end of the year. We\’re eager to find out more about the Ring, and we\’ll keep you updated on anything new we discover.
