Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 earbuds review: Design, battery life and more

Not all earbud improvements need to be giant leaps. Small changes can make a solid product even better. That\’s exactly what Sennheiser did with their fourth-generation Momentum True Wireless 4 ($300).

\"Sennheiser

They\’ve kept the top-notch sound quality, it\’s kind of their trademark. What\’s new? Updated Bluetooth technology, high-res audio, Bluetooth LE Audio support, and a battery-life extender. But, some perks might be missed based on user experience.

Momentum True Wireless 4. What about its design?

The look of the Momentum True Wireless 4 is a twin to its predecessor, the Momentum True Wireless 3. But, there\’s a snazzy new copper/black color, plus the old favorites, silver/black and silver/white. Also, you\’ll find a fourth extra-tiny ear tip in the box.

They still give you three stabilizer arc sizes for the perfect fit.

Need help with the fit? Just use their Smart Control app\’s fit test. The IP54 rating is another neat addition. That means a better defense against dust and water spray.

The Momentum True Wireless 4, Sennheiser\’s newest earbuds, keep delivering the remarkable sound Sennheiser is famed for. Plus, they also bring in some beneficial updates over the former version, proving they are indeed better.

Momentum True Wireless 4 earbuds Features

In the Momentum True Wireless 4, there are significant changes. It\’s updated with Qualcomm\’s S5 Sound Gen 2 platform and Snapdragon Sound. A redesigned antenna improves the reliability of these fourth-gen wireless earbuds. Concerns about dropouts and a companion app that wouldn\’t recognize the Momentum True Wireless 3 have been addressed.

Sennheiser\’s Sound Control app manages settings and customization for the Momentum True Wireless 4. Here, you can monitor battery levels, Bluetooth connections, tweak sound and ANC settings, adjust transparency levels, alter touch controls, run a fit test, and set up Sound Zones. This feature adjusts audio settings like ANC and transparency based on your location. You need to grant the app location access for this feature.

Sennheiser\’s earbuds are future-proof to offer value over the years. They support Bluetooth 5.4, prepped for LE Audio, and Auracast. An update to add broadcast audio and audio sharing is expected soon.

For premium Android users, Snapdragon Sound enhances audio quality. Stream \”flawless\” lossless audio from compatible music services. Choose from two settings: high resolution at 24-bit/96kHz or 16-bit/44.1kHz.

A battery protection mode extends the lifespan by avoiding overcharging, stopping at 80%. This is necessary as earbud batteries are typically not replaceable. The Momentum True Wireless 4 also benefits the environment due to its prolonged life.

The sound quality of these buds upholds Sennheiser\’s reputation for quality sound. The audio profile is pleasing, featuring bass and a smooth midrange. Excellent detail and clearly immersive sound provide hours of enjoyment. For those who prefer custom tuning, use the 5-band EQ or the Sound Personalization feature.

Android users get improved audio quality. The difference is noticeable, especially regarding finer details, but what\’s \”better\” depends on your taste. Bear in mind higher-res playback will affect battery life and needs a special subscription. iOS users, on the other hand, can enjoy a unique listening experience coupled with Apple Music\’s superior audio quality.

ANC performance

The Momentum True Wireless 4, like the model before it, uses an adaptive ANC system. This adjusts to your surroundings for a better sound experience. I didn\’t detect any changes in the noise-canceling function of this new model compared to its predecessor.

It functions fine in many situations. However, it has a tough time with human voices and isn\’t as powerful when dealing with constant noise such as from a fan or a white noise machine. Compared to Bose and Sony\’s top earbuds, it falls short.

For calls, the Momentum True Wireless 4 uses six mics. The quality of the calls is acceptable, not flawless, as long as the environment is quiet.

Constant noise, like a noisy fan, can introduce an indistinct hum that still stands out. The earbuds\’ Transparency mode aids a bit during calls as it makes you aware of your surroundings.

The sound feels natural compared to other earbuds, but it doesn\’t feed in your voice. As a result, it doesn\’t match up to Apple\’s Air Pods Pro.

About battery life, the Momentum True Wireless 4 promises seven hours with ANC on.

Turning off ANC adds another 30 minutes. In my tests, mostly listening with ANC at around 70% volume and few calls using Transparency mode, the earbuds easily lasted seven hours. The case also supports wireless charging, providing up to 30 hours of use on the move.

A quick wireless charging feature can give you one hour\’s use from an eight-minute charge.

Sony\’s WF-1000XM5 is still at the front of the pack. Although the Momentum True Wireless 4 excels in sound quality, Sony\’s earbuds offer better noise cancellation and additional useful features.

Tools such as Speak-to-Chat auto pausing and DSEE Extreme audio upscaling are valuable. Like the Sennheiser model, Sony\’s earbuds have the feature to change sound settings based on your location.

As the WF-1000XM5 was released last July, they are often on sale, currently for $278, $22 less than the Momentum True Wireless 4.

PROS

  • Excellent sound quality
  • Support for higher-resolution audio on Android
  • Good battery life
  • Customization options

CONS

  • $50 more than previous model
  • No design refresh
  • No spatial audio

In conclusion, even though the design hasn\’t changed, the updates on the Momentum True Wireless 4 make it a good choice among high-quality sound earbuds. Its sound quality is impressive, this is its biggest plus for me.

Combine this with high-res audio on Android, user-friendly features, and strong battery life, this model ticks many boxes for premium earbuds. Despite these plus points, ANC could be improved, and some people might miss a spatial sound feature. However, just because the Momentum True Wireless 4 excels in some areas does not mean it\’s flawless.
