According to a former Rockstar developer, the huge GTA 6 leak wasn’t really a big deal. Obbe Vermeij, who worked on GTA 3 and San Andreas, mentioned in an interview that he didn’t pay much attention to the leak. He thinks leaks often aren’t as significant as people believe, especially because Rockstar is known for being so secretive.
Vermeij, who has devoted a large portion of his time in recent years to revealing the inner workings of the studio’s previous games, says, “It’s just that there are millions of people waiting for any news, and Rockstar doesn’t give them any news.”
Vermeij believes that he “completely understands” why those firms never release any news, “because big companies—like Rockstar, EA, or Ubisoft always face criticism and analysis for anything they say.” Thus, from the developer’s perspective, “being silent is their best option. They are acting in that manner. Although it’s unfortunate, it’s not entirely their responsibility.
Rockstar claims that the disclosure of numerous early gameplay videos and photos cost them $5 million and “thousands of hours of staff time,” and that the GTA 6 leak was “extremely” disappointing. The GTA 6 trailer has given us a much closer look at the game since that leak, but Vermeij says even that might not be too much to get excited about. Although he is no longer with Rockstar, he predicts that GTA 6 won’t be “wildly different” from GTA 5, which may disappoint some fans.
