On April 2, Google Podcasts will close down in the US. This means people who use it will need to find a new platform for listening to podcasts. Google first said they would shut it down in September 2023.
Now, YouTube Music will take over. Google has made many updates to make YouTube Music better for podcasts. They added a section just for podcasts, and you can see pictures, when things happen in episodes, and make lists of episodes you like. They also made it easier to find new shows and switch between just listening and watching video podcasts.
Google wants to help people move their podcast stuff to YouTube Music or other places. But moving stuff to another place might not be easy for everyone.
We suggest using YouTube Music for an easier transition. You have until July 2024 to move your data to another platform, as per a Google support page. After that, it’s not possible. Here are quick steps to transfer your data to YouTube Music:
- Open the Google Podcasts app and tap “Export Subscriptions” at the top.
- Choose the “Export to YouTube Music” option and tap “Export.”
- If you don’t have YouTube Music, you’ll be prompted to install it. After installation, tap “Transfer” to proceed.
- Follow the instructions that appear on the YouTube Music page. This may take a few minutes, depending on how much data you have.
If you want to transfer to a third-party service:
- Again, tap “Export Subscriptions” in Google Podcasts.
- This time, select “Download” under the “Export for Another App” section. This creates an ‘OPML‘ file.
- Look for an app that supports the ‘OPML‘ format, such as Podcast Addicts, Cast Box, or Pocket Casts.
- We recommend Pocket Casts for its easy interface. After installing it, use its import tool, which usually appears upon opening the app, to upload the ‘OPML’ file and complete the transfer.
To easily upload the OPML file, just tap “Import” at the top, and it’ll take you to your phone’s Downloads folder where the file is. Then, you can upload it from there.
Stick with YouTube Music for the simplest way to migrate. A YouTube representative said Google Podcasts will close down for all users worldwide this year, but they didn’t give an exact time.
