According to reports, Google has added support for eSIM (electronic SIM card) transfers between Android smartphones. The first indication of this feature came last year, when some users were able to successfully move their eSIMs from previous Pixel phones to the Pixel 8. Users now appear to be able to transfer their digital SIM cards to a Samsung Galaxy S24 series phone as well, suggesting that this capability is no longer limited to Pixel devices.

According to Android Police, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra setup screen prompts users to transfer their SIM card from another handset. The process requires you to unlock your existing phone and place it next to the new device, after which a notification appears on the older phone to initiate the transfer.

Transferring your current eSIM from an old phone to a new Android handset works by scanning a QR code — similar to activating a new eSIM. This makes switching phones just as convenient as physically swapping a SIM card, without the need to visit a store.
Google announced its plans to allow users to convert physical SIM cards to eSIMs and transfer eSIMs between devices at MWC 2023. While this feature was initially observed when users upgraded from older Pixel phones to the Pixel 8, its appearance on the Galaxy S24 Ultra suggests that Google intends to extend the feature to other manufacturers.

The ability to transfer an existing eSIM to a different phone is not yet widely available. According to Android Police, the feature is currently limited to T-Mobile eSIM profiles. Users in regions outside T-Mobile’s coverage — including India — will be able to transfer their eSIMs to another Android device once their local telecom providers enable Google’s transfer capability.
